Market Comment - 10th January 2023

Good morning,

Eurozone unemployment came in at the expected 6.5%. This meant FX markets were relatively quiet yesterday with no other scheduled news out.

Today could be a different kettle of fish however. Whilst on paper it looks like a bit of a yawnathon of speeches, the reality is there's some big hitters giving those speeches today.

There's a central bank symposium happening today so later this morning there's a panel giving their views including the heads of the Bank of England, Bank of Japan, and the Bank of Canada and a senior member of the ECB.

Later the FED's chief gives his views also. Could be an interesting day.

The early hours of tomorrow could also cause a stir as Australia announces its retail sales numbers and China releases its inflation data.

Business news is now turning towards the inevitable. Major companies are now asking employees to return to the office, albeit normally on a reduced week. The latest company is Disney where they are asking office staff to return from Monday to Thursday.
